The Picture Engine was created to take advantage of new technology and some intensive research into new printing techniques which allow us to print onto almost any flat surface. It occurred to us that these new techniques would allow us to use material that we would otherwise have thrown away, and we started by experimenting on bits of wood we had in the workshop. After some testing on wood offcuts from a local joinery company, and undertaking a few projects using scrap sheet metal from an office furniture manufacturer, we decided that our existing photoproducts business could be complemented by these new products.
So, here is The Picture Engine, where you can choose one of our existing designs or send us your own photos and text to create unique personalised gifts with an environmentally friendly twist – they are all printed on things that other people were throwing out!
One unintended consequence of using reclaimed materials is the variability of the print – because we have to take what we can get, we get different thicknesses, grain patterns, surface textures and all sorts of variables that make every one of our prints unique! We can’t guarantee consistency, but we CAN guarantee unique, quirky, eco-friendly products that make great gifts or enhance your home.
